    Description

This early out-of-print  book, profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs, is a scholarly study of  antique English porcelain.
    ENGLISH PORCELAIN 1745-1850
edited by R.J. Charleston, Tortonto UP, 1965.
A team of experts presents the history of production of early English porcelain from various manufacturers:  Chelsea, Bow, Derby, Longton Hall, Worcester, Liverpool, Caughley and Coalport, Lowestoft, Pinxton, Swansea and Nantgarw, Rockingham, Plymouth and Bristol, New Hall (hard paste and bone china).  Miscellaneous 19th century factories such as Herculaneum also receive attention and there is an interesting list of museums and homes with good collections of English porcelain that may be open to the public.  Each chapter on a different manufacturer contains its own special bibliography while a general bibliography and index round out this survey, which contains much information on biographies of makers and artists, as well as good line drawings of marks. This definitive text is a collector’s item in itself and belongs in the permanent reference library of the collector, dealer, or historian of antique English pottery and porcelain.
